Built by someone who got tired of rebuilding it.
Greg Asquith built the same thing for client after client: somewhere a business could keep what it knows and have agents do real work with it, with a person still in charge. Then he built it once, properly, and opened the source.

Getting a model to call a tool stopped being the hard part a while ago.
The hard part is everything around it. Where does what the business knows actually live, and who owns it? Who is the agent acting as? Which accounts can it see? What may it do on its own, and what needs a person? What does the record look like afterwards, when someone asks why?
My background is digital advertising and the systems around it: ad accounts, reporting, data pipelines, client context, and the work that falls between the standard tools. That is where I kept rebuilding the same surrounding layer.
Praxis Agents OS is that layer, built once and made open source. I stopped rebuilding it, and anyone else can now read it, run it and change it.
I maintain the project and work with a small number of companies on private implementations. The software stays open under Apache 2.0 either way.
If software decides what happens in your business, you should be able to read it.
What your business knows, and the rules about what an agent may do with it, should not depend on one vendor's release cycle. You can read them, change them, and keep them.
